Vijaya Dashami

Vijaya DashamiThe Vijaya Dashami or the day of Tika is the tenth and the most important day of the Dashain festival. This is the day when the Goddess Durga won over the demon Mahisasur, and Lord Ram over demon Ravan, according to the scriptures. In this day, all the Nepalese Hindu people all around the world receive ‘Tika’ and ‘Jamara (the yellow grown plants which are planted in the )’, along with the blessings from their elder ones.

The Tika is actually the mixture of the rice seeds, yoghurt and the vermillion, and is red in colour. The red colour of the tika symbolizes the unity of the family with their blood relationship, as only the family members and close relatives receive tika from their elder ones. Along with the blessings, Jamara and Tika, people usually give a small amount of sum or other physical items as gifts, which is normally called as ‘Dakshina’.

The President of the country applies Tika to the public, which was done by the King in the past (when the monarchy was present). Though this is the most important day for the Tika of Dashain, the process is continued for five days starting this day, and up to the Purnima.
