iPhone 4G- features and concept

June 1st, 2010 Ashesh

Some interesting things came about when Apple introduced their iPhone 4G with operating system 4.0. It was immediately hacked and it also immediately gave users a few nice updates that other smartphones owners were already enjoying. Here is the lowdown on the upcoming iPhone 4G update to the iPhone.

The Apple iPhone 4G (4.0) system was revealed to the world of developers, but not to the general public. It will have many of the things that Apple has in common with Nokia or Android units. The biggest thing that is coming to many of the iPhones is the ability to do multi-tasking. This means you will be able to do more than one thing on your iPhone. This will only be available on 3GS and newer models of the iPod touch. If you have been disappointed to hear news of multi-tasking abilities for the iPhone in times past, this event seems to be the real thing. To access this ability, double-tap the home button. Three Firefox Hacks that’ll Double Browsing Speed

May 28th, 2010 Ashesh 2 comments
There are many people out there complaining about the Firefox RAM Memory Bug. Lets get it straight. It’s not a bug. It’s part of the cache feature. This ‘feature’ is how the pages are cached in a tabbed environment.
To improve performance when navigating (studies show that 39% of all page navigations are renavigations to pages visited less than 10 pages ago, usually using the back button), Firefox implements a Back-Forward cache that retains the rendered document for the last five session history entries for each tab.
This is a lot of data. If you have a lot of tabs, Firefox’s RAM memory usage can climb dramatically. It’s a trade-off. What you get out of it is faster performance as you navigate the web.
Now a lot of us have found the ’secrets’ on how to manipulate settings in “about:config” to drop the memory usage as long as possible and to increase the speed at which Firefox loads sites. Read on to find out how to do this.
Remember: Firefox (download it here) is the best internet browser available (in my opinion), and these tweaks below will make it even greater and faster. So enjoy! Read more…

13-year-old boy becomes youngest climber to stand on peak of Mount Everest

May 24th, 2010 Ashesh 2 comments

A 13-year-old California boy plans to try to climb Mount Everest in a quest to reach the summits of the highest peaks on all seven continents.

If Jordan Romero succeeds, he’ll become the youngest person to conquer the world’s highest mountain.

Jordan will attempt the ascent to 29,035 feet with his father and his father’s girlfriend, both experienced outdoors people who have helped train the teenager for top-level mountaineering.

When Jordan was only 9, a school mural of the seven summits inspired his ambitious goal.

“I told my dad about it and he didn’t say no. He just explained the difficulties and what I’d have to do. We started training right away,” said Jordan, who was scheduled to depart for Nepal Monday night.

At age 10, he became the youngest American to summit Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest peak. He’s steadily checked off four of the tallest peaks since then, including Alaska’s Mount McKinley, which many climbers consider to be a more technical climb than Everest. Read more…

Lewis Pugh – swims Mount Everest glacial lake

May 24th, 2010 Ashesh

Environmentalist Lewis Pugh, 40, wore just trunks, goggles and a swimming hat to swim 1km (0.62 miles) across Pumori Lake. The icy lake lies 17,000ft (5,300m) up the famous mountain near the Khumbu Glacier and its waters are around just 2C.

Lewis took 22 minutes and 51 seconds to breast stroke across the lake and had to find a “delicate balance” between going too fast and too slowly.

He says if he had gone too quick he could have lost energy and drowned but if he had been too slow he would have suffered hypothermia. Read more…

Google's Pac-Man Front Sapped 4.8 Million Hours of Productivity

May 24th, 2010 Ashesh

The nearly universal reaction to seeing Google’s playable 30th anniversary Pac-Man doodle was, “Well, there goes Friday.” Indeed. A productivity firm has calculated the time spent playing Google’s Pac-Man front at more than 4.8 million hours.

RescueTime, makers of productivity tracking and optimization software, looked at the average time that 11,000 of its users spent on Google’s pages on Friday and found it more than quadrupled. Normally they spend 11 seconds on a Google page, but on Friday they spent 45.

Google page visit time is very low, of course, because people find whatever they need very quickly and usually hit a link on the first page of results. To triple the time spent on a Google page means something else is going on, and in this case, it was chompin’ dots.

So what? Just 45 seconds, right? Well, Google also did more than 500 million pageviews on Friday. So RescueTime, assuming its user base was representative (and 11,000 is a damn good sample size), ran some numbers and came up with: Read more…

Pac-Man 30th anniversary Google doodle turns homepage into game

May 21st, 2010 Ashesh

The Pac-Man 30th anniversary Google doodle

Google has become famous for changing its logo for special events, but it has never converted it into a playable game before. Today, it is celebrating the 30th anniversary of Pac-Man’s launch in Japan with a version that lets you steer your pizza-shaped protagonist* around a maze that spells out Google’s name – at least for as long as you can evade the ghosts Inky, Blinky, Pinky and Clyde

To play, simply click the button that usually says “I’m feeling lucky” but now has the legend “Insert Coin”. However, if you don’t do anything, the game will start by itself.

If you click twice on “Insert Coin” then two people can play. Ms Pac-Man joins the game, with the second person controlling her movements using the WASD keys. Read more…

Google Tries to Simplify Fonts on the Web

May 20th, 2010 Ashesh

Today, Google unveiled the Google Font Directory and the Google Font API to help bring dynamic and selective typefaces to the web.

The issues surrounding fonts and the web are complicated and can be tricky to navigate. Google  is hoping to make it easier for developers to integrate more distinctive typefaces into their designs.

Google’s cross-browser solution is similar to what companies like Typekit and Fontdeck are doing, that is, providing users with a library of available fonts that they can easily embed into their sites. Typekit has partnered with lots of commercial foundries and is priced affordably for designers who want to use lots of commercial typefaces legally.

Google’s solution is unique in that it is comprised of open source fonts. Google’s Font API can be integrated into websites using either HTML or using a JavaScript WebFont Loader co-developed with Typekit. Read more…
