On the occasion of the Nepalese New Year 2070 BS, I would like to extend my best wishes to all my family, friends and readers. Hope this year will bring the best in you, hope you will find the strength to succeed in whatever you are doing and hope you will work hard to build a pathway for a better future for everyone. Live everyday like it’s your last.
Having said that, here is a brief history of how the Nepalese Year or Bikram Era started:
Bikram Samvat or Era (विक्रम सम्वत्) is the calendar established by the first LIchhavi King Vikramaditya marking the sovereign history of Nepal dating back to 2070 years ago from today. The Bikram Samvat or BS calendar is well ahead of the western or Christian calendar by over 56 years. The Bikram Samvat is supposed to commemorate the victory of king Vikramaditya over the Sakas who had invaded Ujjain.
Like the Bikram Sambat Nepal Sambat is another indigenous era established in 936 BS. The Newar community celebrates both Nepal Sambat and Mahapuja together on the same day. The Nepal Sambat on the other hand was established duering the malla period and in use during the reign of Prithvi Narayan Shah and Rana regime. However, there was only 354 days in Nepal Sambat in contrast to 365 days in the Bikram Sambat Calendar. Therefore, Chandra Shamser deiced to use Bikram Sambat as Nepalese official calendar to resolve the issues of changes in tithi (date).
The Nepalese year begins in Baisakh which falls in 14th of April and ends in the twelfth month of Chaitra. Baisakh can be linked to New Year in several parts of India and other countries of Asia. Buddhists celebrate the month of Baisakh as Buddha Purnima in Nepal, Bangladesh and India. Buddha purnima commemorates the birth and passing of Gautam Buddha. The same festival is called Visaka Puja in Thailand, Waisak in Indonesia and Wesak in Sri Lanka. Read more…
Apple’s patent spree continues with the latest filing of patent for drop protection mechanism in the iPhone. The patent describes advanced mechanisms such as “mass shifting” and “thrust” to slowdown the fall and reduce the impact on the iPhone surface. Other protection technology includes “contracting buttons” to prevent them from damage and a “gripping” mechanism so that the iPhone holds on to the headphone cable if it drops.
Other protection systems mentioned in the patent include a technology that would collect and store information about the drop of the iPhone. This data would then be used by Apple to decide how the device falls which would be useful to design a sturdier product. If you are interested to read the entire patent filing you can do so here at US Patent and Trademark Office’s website: Patent for Protection Mechanism
Here are some images of the protection technology mentioned in the patent:

The much awaited flagship phone of Samsung, the Galaxy S4 has been finally officially released. Prior to the release, a lot of hype was created beginning with the first photo leak which appeared a month back in the website. Now that we have gotten our hands on the device, we can decide whether the S4 actually live up to its hype and whether it is worth upgrading for the Galaxy S3 users.
Display: First up let’s take a look at the hardware side of this device. The first thing you will notice is that Samsung Galaxy S4 has one of the biggest displays compared to other latest Smart phones in the market. The SGS 4 is equipped with a 5 inch 1920X1080 full HD (1080p) AMOLED screen with 441 ppi. Thus, the S4 screen is bigger than that of HTC One (4.7 inch), iphone 5 and Galaxy S3 (4.8 inch) but smaller than Galaxy Note 2(5.5 inch). The screen ppi of Galaxy s3 was only 360 ppi and 720 x 1,280 pixels. Also, the Galaxy S4 has corning Gorilla Glass 3 whereas Galaxy S3 has Gorilla Glass 2- regarding this we still don’t know how big a difference it is, all we know is that the former is superior.
